Frequently Asked Questions About
Recovering Deleted Files

Q: Can I undelete files that were removed from the Windows ® Recycle Bin, files deleted on network shares, files from the DOS command prompt, or files from Windows Explorer when I had bypassed the Recycled Bin by holding down the SHIFT key?

A: Recovering deleted files is easy in all of the above scenarios.

Q: What are the strengths of File Scavenger as a file undelete product for Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP?

A: File Scavenger was designed to be a high-quality commercial product. The many strengths include:

  • Meticulously designed and tested to undelete files in as many cases as possible.
  • Optimized to scan large disks.
  • Supports the standard Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP compression engine.
  • Provides the flexibility in switching between Normal and Exhaustive Search mode.  In Normal Search mode you can quickly find recently deleted files.  In Exhaustive Search mode the entire disk is searched for any traces of files.  Exhaustive Searches take longer but may succeed where Normal Searches fail.
  • The Defunct Volume Search mode, new in version 2, scans an entire physical hard drive to look for remnants of old volumes.  This mode is extremely useful when a volume has been deleted from a physical disk and its position on the disk and size are not known.  (If they are there and the space has not been reused, you should redefine the volume at the exact same location and size and use the Exhaustive Search mode.)
  • The Defunct Search mode can also reconstruct files on a broken striped volume (software RAID) or hardware RAID disk.  If the component drives are still available, you can mount all of the drives on a computer and use File Scavenger to reconstruct the volume.  For a striped volume (software RAID 5) or hardware RAID 5, one of the drives can be missing because the parity information on the remaining drive(s) is sufficient to reconstruct the data on the missing drive.
  • Provides a simple and powerful user interface.  Menus and buttons are easy to use.  Files can be sorted by date, size, name, type, etc.
  • Provides file pattern matching.  You can search for specific file types by selecting from a list of registered types (e.g. *.doc), all files in a folder (e.g. "/folder1/*"), etc.
  • Can undelete multiple files or entire folders in one operation.
  • Supports new NTFS features in Windows XP and Windows 2000 such as sparse files (i.e. files whose contents are mostly zeroes), alternate data streams, etc.
  • Restores original Create and Modified file dates.
  • Provides a Unicode version for non-alphabet languages (available since 02/2002).
  • Supports both basic and dynamic disks.
  • Recovers not only the file, but in most cases also the folder path leading to the file.

Q: Can I undo a format operation on a NTFS volume?

A: File Scavenger cannot undo a format operation on a NTFS volume. However, it can recover files and folders on the volume onto a new volume.

Q: What can I do to speed up scanning of large disks?

A: Searching is faster for a more specific search patterns such as "a*.doc", compared to, for example, "*.doc", or "*.*".  Normal Search is also much faster than the other modes.

Q: Can File Scavenger recover compressed files?

A: Yes.  File Scavenger has no problem recovering deleted files that were compressed using the standard Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP compression engine.

Q: Can File Scavenger cause any harms to my files or disk partitions?

A: Absolutely not.  File Scavenger accesses the volume being recovered in READ ONLY mode.  When you recover data to another volume, data is read from the first volume and then written to the second volume using standard file I/O operations.  While File Scavenger is scanning a volume, do not use Windows Explorer to make changes to files or folders on the volume.

Q: What is the licensing policy for File Scavenger?

A: You can purchase Personal Use or Professional Use Licenses.  A Personal Use License is intended for individual use and can be used on a single computer.  A Personal Use license can be transferred from the original computer to a second computer in the following scenarios:

  • The original computer is being retired and replaced by the second computer.
  • The license is bought for the original computer for testing.  The actual use is intended for the second computer.
The right to transfer a license is not intended to allow a license to be used as a floating license among multiple computers.

A Professional Use License is intended for a computer support person who needs to use the software on other users' computers.  A Professional Use License is registered to a named individual and can be used by the individual on any computer.  A Professional Use License can be transferred to a second individual when the original licensee no longer intends to use the product, such as in the case of permanent change in job assignments.  The right to transfer a license is not intended to allow a license to be shared among multiple users.
